How much of an effect would you say perfectionism has on YOUR creativity?

Here's the story of two creative friends and how their different attitudes to perfectionism affected how they tackled a new creative project. Andre wanted to create a series of Artist Trading Cards to exchange with his creative colleagues.

Atc

"I've just got to come up with a set of 5 tiny cards, simply decorated. That shouldn't take me long at all..." He thought.

So Andre sat down to create.

Meanwhile, across town, Amelie - who was a part of the same artist's community as Andre - sat down to start on her 5 cards. She was equally excited and thought too that coming up with 5 ATCs would be pretty easy. So far, so similar.

5 minutes later, back with Andre: "Hmm, this card is not quite the right stock. It's not thick enough. And my glue's nearly run out. I'd better get some more just in case." Off he headed to the stationary store in the next town. By the time he'd arrived there, Amelie was halfway through her second card. She'd run out of red card but improvised using purple and actually found it looked better anyway.

Back with Andre 90 minutes later he was still choosing the right glue and card. While he'd been in the store he's also seen all kinds of other materials that made him wonder if he was properly equipped. 15 minutes later he'd made his purchase and headed home, considerably lighter of wallet. By now, Amelie had 4 ATC's ready to go, and was loving the creative challenge. She enjoyed improvising with the materials she had and was come across all kinds of happy accidents in her creating.

Andre unpacked his new supplies and laid them out before him on his table. Before he wasn't quite sure where to start but had a few possible ideas. Now he was completely overwhelmed with the possibilities the materials before him suggested. An hour later he was still sifting through materials, trying to find the perfect card to use. He hadn't even got to his new glue gun and set of 7 different bladed craft knives.

Amelie, 9 cards later, decided to call it a day. She was proud of her work and the process has taught her to improvise more and be creative in new ways. ATCs were the way forward! Andre however was cursing the day he'd agreed to join the challenge. "How can it be so hard to create these tiny cards!!?". And no, he still hadn't chosen the right type of card to use.

What's the moral of the story?

Andre was a die-hard perfectionist. He'd never created anything he was totally happy with. As a result he created less and less, and each time the pressure felt greater, however small the creative project seemed on the surface.

Amelie was have-a-go-girl. She'd taught herself to be more creative by getting her hands covered in glue and glitter, and made the most of whatever supplies she had at the time. She didn't understand how Andre managed to spend about as much each month on creative supplies as she spent on food, yet he didn't create much and wasn't ever happy when he did.

So, be honest, who are you most like, Andre or Amelie?

There's a bit of Andre in all of us. But often we don't realise what a major impact the toxic clutches of perfectionism have on our creativity.

Imagine how much you could create if you had no concept of perfectionism? Isn't that a state worth striving for? What's the first step you can take today to being a little less perfectionist? Take that step, you never know where it might lead.
